Solid Energy Job Losses A Blow to Huntly Community

Waikato Mayor Allan Sanson says job losses announced today by Solid Energy in Huntly are a huge blow to affected staff, their families and the wider community and will have a big impact on the town and neighbouring areas.

Solid Energy today announced 107 jobs would go with 93 people proposed to be made redundant at the Huntly East Mine and in management and support services.

Mayor Sanson, himself a Huntly resident says “These job losses are a huge blow to staff and their families as well as to the wider community and businesses in the area. That’s a lot of families affected by this decision, and the flow-on effect will ripple across the district.

“If there is any good news in this it is that Solid Energy is keeping the Huntly East Mine open, and I hope that further down the track the global market for coal improves so the business can increase its operations. However only time will tell on that front but with Solid Energy’s long history in Huntly I know they have a strong connection with this community.

“In the meantime, my thoughts are with all those affected by this and I will be working hard to see what other employment opportunities might be available.”
