NZ's Top Electrical Apprentice to Be Crowned Next Week

New Zealand’s top electrical apprentice will be named next week in Hamilton.

Ten electrical apprentices from throughout the country will compete at the ECANZ Challenge to be held on August 14-15 at Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton.

Winners will be announced on August 16.

The ECANZ Challenge is an electrical industry initiative to find the most outstanding individual with a flair for either domestic/commercial or industrial work.

More than 100 apprentices enter each year.

At stake are thousands of dollars in prizes, including three scholarships to the life-changing Outward Bound course sponsored by The Skills Organisation (New Zealand's electrotechnology ITO), and the coveted Apprentice of the Year Award.

The Skills Organisation’s head of specialist trades Paul Hollings said the event was a key date on the industry training calendar.

“It’s great to see the cream of the emerging New Zealand electrical crop come together to compete and to be recognised for their outstanding skills,” Hollings said.

“The Skills Organisation is delighted to once again be involved in fostering the future of this country’s industry.”  

The finalists will be in good company at the event’s awards dinner – basketball supercoach Tab Baldwin has been named as the guest speaker.
