Action promises to continue community-focussed leadership for Manurewa
An uncompromising commitment to tackle suburban liquor stores; ban the sale of psychoactive substances such as synthetic cannabis; remove mangrove plants; complete local parks, community and transport infrastructure; and resist apartment towers destroying the character of Manurewa’s neighbourhoods.
That is a campaign platform that the Manurewa Action Team will take to the October local government election. Action will field a full ticket of candidates for the Manurewa Local Board and Wiri Licensing Trust. Calum Penrose and Sir John Walker, will contest the two available Manurewa-Papakura council seats.
Action leader and Manurewa Local Board chairperson Angela Dalton said Action deserved to be re-elected based on its record of effective and positive leadership.
“In just three short years we have opened the Manurewa Sports Centre, begun the recovery of Netball Manurewa at Browns Road, and begun the transformation of Riverton Reserve in Randwick Park.
“Action has helped to double the number of CCTV cameras in the Manurewa Town Centre, enabled private CCTV in Wattle Downs, resource secured consent to remove 19 hectares of mangroves from the Waimahia Inlet and Manukau Harbour foreshore.
“Working alongside Calum and Sir John, Action brought the Associate Minister of Health to Manurewa to challenge the sale and supply of psychoactive drugs, successfully campaigned for an overhaul of New Zealand’s liquor laws, and we established the Manurewa Youth Council and a Youth Leadership scholarship programme,” Angela Dalton said.

Veteran former Labour Member of Parliament Hon George Hawkins said Action’s reputation for leadership is unsurpassed in Manurewa.
“Action has succeeded in giving Manurewa a strong voice in local government despite the emergence of the so-called super city. And both Calum Penrose and Sir John Walker have worked constructively with the local board over these past three years,” George Hawkins said.
