Native Affairs Investigates Death of 12 Year-Old Let Down by the State
On Monday in a television exclusive, NATIVE AFFAIRS sits down with the whanau of Krystal, the girl who in 2008 tragically took her own life while in care of Child Youth and Family Services.
Krystal was full of promise, but a few weeks after making allegations that she was sexually abused while in CYFS care she took her own life.
No charges were ever laid.
NATIVE AFFAIRS’ reporter Ruwani Perera speaks to Krystal’s dad, Ferguson, to investigate the issues surrounding this tragedy.
Ruwani says ‘Krystal’s story needed to be told, the family feel it is important to talk about the repercussions they are still experiencing five years after her death’.
Producer Annabelle Lee-Harris says the story of Krystal is an extremely important for all New Zealanders.
“Krystal was a 12 year old-girl taken into care by the state, this decision was supposed to protect her, but in the end it led to her death.”
Tune into NATIVE AFFAIRS on Monday, 22 July at 8.30pm.
