National's Blue Socialism A Blast From The Past
Libertarianz leader Richard McGrath says John Key's Think Big Auckland projects and petrol tax hikes are reminiscent of
the worst excesses of Muldoonism.
"Individual freedom and limited government are supposed to be core values of the National Party. Where do a
taxpayer-funded three billion dollar train set for Len Brown, a four and a half billion dollar harbour tunnel (both
pre-budget blowout), and gouging customers 92 cents for each litre of petrol they purchase, fit into any sort of vision
of limited government?"
He added: "These projects should be funded by the people who use them. Over time, taxpayers - including Auckland
ratepayers - should be refunded - with interest - the development costs of the rail loop and harbour road tunnel, by
tolling the tunnel road and charging rail travellers a realistic price, after which the infrastructure should be sold
off."
"The latest hike in the excise tax on petrol is a further slap in the face for motorists. Those who lament the rising
cost of fuel need only look to our greedy grasping politicians. Thanks to them, 43% of the cost of petrol at the pump is
tax."
"The Blue Socialists have clearly run out of ideas and are now using those of Labour and the Greens. Clever politically,
but very unclever economically, and a betrayal of principle. How long will the National Party membership tolerate this
before there is open revolt?"
