Maori Television Presents Ikaroa-Rawhiti By-Election Special

Maori Television is pleased to announce that it will provide LIVE coverage of the Ikaroa-Rawhiti By-Election on Saturday, June 29 from 7.00pm.

Hosted by Native Affairs presenter Mihingarangi Forbes, the IKAROA-RAWHITI BY-ELECTION SPECIAL combines television and online coverage of the by-election in a unique programming initiative.

Coverage runs from 7.00pm to 7.30pm on Maori Television and again from 9.10pm until 9.40pm on Saturday, June 29. It will run continuously from 7.00pm until 9.40pm online at www.maoritelevision.com.

Maori Television’s general manager of news and current affairs Julian Wilcox says the special approach to the coverage highlights the broadcaster’s commitment to the Maori electorates.

“We are the home of the Maori electorates and the home of Maori news. By integrating our television and online coverage we can ensure that viewers will get complete and up-to-date information about the by-election while retaining our Saturday television line-up.”

Throughout the IKAROA-RAWHITI BY-ELECTION SPECIAL Mihingarangi Forbes will interview a panel of political pundits about the major issues in the electorate, the calibre of the candidates and the possibility that Labour’s stranglehold on this electorate could be lost.

Te Kaea weekend news presenter Amomai Pihama will provide poll updates and crosses to reporters, who will be with the leading candidates in the electorate.

Seven candidates are seeking election as the Ikaroa-Rawhiti MP following the death of Labour politician Parekura Horomia last month.

Those standing are Meka Whaitiri (Labour), Na Rongowhakaata Raihania (Maori), Marama Davidson (Green), Te Hamua Nikora (Mana), Adam Holland (Independent), Maurice Wairau (Independent) and Michael Appleby (Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party).

Producer Annabelle Lee-Harris says the IKAROA-RAWHITI BY-ELECTION SPECIAL will be both informal and informative, coming from the wharekai at the heart of Maori Television.

“We’ve created a modern take on election coverage that combines the traditional television platform with the internet and our wide network of friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter.”

Maori Television presents LIVE coverage of the Ikaroa-Rawhiti By-Election in a television and online special screening from 7.00pm on Saturday, June 29.

Television broadcast: 7.00pm – 7.30pm and 9.10pm – 9.40pm
Online at www.maoritelevision.com from 7.00pm.
