Stop the Ethnic Cleansing
THURSDAY 13TH JUNE 2013
“It’s a case of ethnic cleansing” says
MANA Candidate for Ikaroa-Rawhiti Te Hamua Nikora reacting
to the protest that took place in Glen Innes last night.
“It’s Maori and Pacifika families in Glen Innes who are being booted out to make way for the wealthy. The Tamaki Housing Group has made numerous appeals to their MP Pita Sharples but he’s abandoned them”.
“And the Maori Party has been silent when it comes to the ethnic cleansing of the Kaiti, Maraenui and Pomare communities in Ikaroa-Rawhiti. The Maori Party Co-Leader, Tariana Turia, is the Associate Minister of Housing and has done nothing for the whanau being booted from their homes and being put into more expensive, private, rental properties. From what I’ve seen majority of these whanau are Maori”.
“Instead of supporting Maori families Tariana Turia has been hacking people off the waiting lists and making the problems worse”.
“There is up to 1000 empty state houses in Ikaroa-Rawhiti as of the end of last year based on Housing NZ figures. What upsets me more is that everybody knows we are facing a housing crisis and there are 75 Housing NZ homes for sale in Hawkes Bay and 99 for sale in Whakatane/Gisborne. This Government, including the Maori Party, have allowed Maori whanau to be evicted from their homes and dislocated from communities that they have lived in for generations, so they can sell their homes to the highest bidder. Meanwhile, our people go without and are made to either walk the streets or pay through the nose to a landlord”.
