Christchurch Decision Will Bring Stress to School Community

Christchurch Decision Will Bring More Stress to School Communities

NZEI Te Riu Roa says today’s final decision on school closures and mergers in Christchurch will bring more hurt to school communities already stressed by the Government’s botched process over the past year.

National President Judith Nowotarski says it’s estimated that around 100 jobs will be affected by school closures announced today – that’s around 60 teaching and 40 support staff.

“On top of this there will be significant uncertainty about jobs, particularly amongst principals and support staff in schools earmarked for merger.

“We are determined to ensure that the change process is done properly and is clear and well communicated.  That means a transparent sharing of information amongst all participants.

“We believe it is a short sighted decision to lose the skills and staff particularly at a time when children are in desperate need of quality teaching and attention.

“NZEI is determined to support school staff so they can continue to provide a quality education for all Christchurch children.”
