Memorial Day is held annually on the final Monday of May honouring the lives of men and women who have died while
serving in the US defence forces. It originated during the US civil war in 1868, where citizens decorated the graves of
fallen soldiers with flowers. By the 20th century it was extended to commemorate all US citizens who have fallen in all
of the nation’s military conflicts. By an act of Congress, Memorial Day was declared a US holiday in 1971.
