Saturday 25th May – The Te Ikaroa Rawhiti by election is heating up. So far the Mana Party and The Maori Party have announced their
candidates who are Na Raihania (Maori Party) and Te Hamua Nikora (Mana) while Labour and the Greens are set to name
theirs over the weekend
The Labour Party is under a different kind of pressure considering it’s a safe seat for Labour. Their task is to come up
with a candidate who can fill the giant shoes left by the electorate’s loyal servant the late Parekura Horomia.
The quality of candidates from the Labour camp like Mana’s and the Maori Party is impressive with the likes of veteran
Maori political broadcaster Shane Taurima, along with long-time community advocates Meka Whatitiri, Molly Keelan – Para,
Haydn Hape, Tamati Olsen and Henare O’Keefe.
This week Waatea News Editor David Kaire makes a special appearance on Korero Mai Ki Ahau and speaks with kaumatua reporter, veteran Maori broadcasting guru and political analyst Rereata Makiha about the outstanding quality of all those throwing their names into the ring.
Sunday 26th May - Finally the findings by the Independent Police Conduct Authority over police actions during the notorious Tuhoe raids
has been released.
The report condemns the police actions calling them unjustified.
Everyone’s waiting for an official police apology; some are saying that isn’t nearly enough.
Tuhoe leader and academic Taiarahia Black talks with David about the multiple injustices and violations Tuhoe people he says were subjected too and how police
actions encroached illegally into law and tikanga Maori and were carried out on kuia, koroua and tamariki.
He views an apology to the Tuhoe people as merely a starting point.
