New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services Announces Support For the Living Wage Campaign
The New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services (NZCCSS) fully supports the Living Wage Campaign. The Council
encourages all social services organisations to work towards becoming living wage employers. NZCCSS recognises progress
towards this goal will be dependent on appropriate funding for services. Therefore the Council urges government and
other agencies to fund in a way that allows social support organisations to be Living Wage employers.
“Our members see the real value of the Living Wage - it will give all working New Zealanders the opportunity to lead
rich and fulfilling lives”, said Trevor McGlinchey, NZCCSS Executive Officer. “They see this as a good move towards the
development of the kind of equal society that will make New Zealand a much fairer and more just nation. On this basis
many of our members are taking positive steps in this direction”.
NZCCSS members work with vulnerable people in most of New Zealand’s communities. They see the reality of insufficient
income and how this impacts on people and families being able to live full and meaningful lives and to contribute to
their communities.
"Our members urge central and local government to ensure they set an example by paying living wages to their employees.
They must also ensure those organisations they contract to deliver services on their behalf are resourced to pay their
employees a living wage”, said McGlinchey. “NZCCSS fully supports the Living Wage Campaign. In the end this support is
based on a belief in the need for greater income equality and a commitment to social justice and compassion for all New
Zealanders”.
