Alliance Backs No Asset Sales Actions

Alliance Backs No Asset Sales Actions

Alliance Party media release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday 26 April 2013

The Alliance Party is backing the National Day of Action against Asset Sales this Saturday 27 April.

Alliance Party co-leader Kay Murray says that the Government's sell off of public assets is losing momentum and it was vital for New Zealanders to make their opposition known.

"The Alliance Party was formed on a platform of keeping public assets in public hands after the privatisation agenda of the Fourth Labour Government and subsequent National Government."

She says the Alliance has consistently held that position and has a positive policy that is about more than just stopping further asset sales.

Ms Murray says the Alliance supports bringing back key assets into the ownership of the people of New Zealand.

The Alliance supports 100% public ownership of the electricity sector to supply affordable electricity to all New Zealanders.

Ms Murray says the Labour/Green policy announcement this week for a single power generation agency was a step in the right direction, and the Alliance if elected to Parliament would support it while seeking to extend the policy.

"We see the Alliance Party policy as a logical step forward to build on these initial changes."

"Power is not there to benefit private shareholders, nor to ensure inflated salaries for CEOs. It is a essential utility that must be accessible by all people."

She says the Alliance is happy to be part of a coalition of concerned people from many political parties, community organisations, unions and activist groups uniting to defend the common good and oppose asset sales.
