Young Labour applauds Wall’s bill as final reading draws near.
History is about to be made this week with MP’s on the brink of passing Labour MP Louisa Walls, Marriage Equality bill on Wednesday. Young Labour is extremely proud of the legacy of positive changes for the LGBTI community in New Zealand that have been led by Labour, and see this Bill as a continuation of this.
"I'm extremely proud that it is a Labour Party MP who's bill which will see the legislating of equal marriage rights" said Levi Joule, Young Labour's Rainbow Rep on the eve of the Third Reading of the Bill.
"Labour has proven throughout our history to be the party that has delivered the real progress needed for LBGT New Zealander's and we are proud that our party is to continue on in that tradition with the passing of marriage equality" said Joule.
Young Labour was proud to name marriage equality and adoption law reform as our number one policy priority in 2012. Since then Young Labour has campaigned heavily on the issue, including ensuring marriage equality was passed at our Party's National Conference.
"This bill goes far beyond allowing same sex couples to marry" says Young Labour's Pacific Rep, Kieran Meredith. "The Bill fosters a sense of belonging; it fosters a society of fairness and equality on all fronts. These are not only Labour values, but also New Zealand values".
