Young Labour connects with Christchurch

CHRISTCHURCH – Over 100 Young Labour members converged on Christchurch last weekend for their annual conference. The conference, entitled "Rebuilding Communities" was symbolic of Labour's solidarity with the people of Christchurch, said incoming President, Jessie Lipscombe.

"Our conference was important not just for our internal decision making, but a great way for us to connect with Christchurch people and learn how Labour can best help them recover" said Lipscombe.

Over 100 delegates joined MPs Megan Woods, Lianne Dalziel, Ruth Dyson and leader David Shearer on the streets of Christchurch speaking to residents during one session.

"It was a chance to meet residents who have been through so much, and are now having to fight against the government and agencies created to help them" said Lipscombe, "we heard some heartbreaking stories".

The public meeting which followed was an opportunity for young people to be forward looking, and positive about the rebuild. Young people from all over Christchurch were asked how they see the future of their city in the session led by Leader, David Shearer.

"Young Labour is in tune with the direction that young Christchurch people want their city to go" said Christchurch Regional Organiser Keir Lesley.

"We had a fantastic weekend, combining exciting policy decisions with electing a talented new executive and connecting with Christchurch residents" concluded Lipscombe.
