Future of NZ depends on the well being of every child

2 March 2013: News from CPAG

The future of New Zealand depends on the well being of every child

Child Poverty Action Group says Children’s Day this Sunday is a chance for New Zealanders to reflect on our collective responsibility for the well-being of all our children.

Everyone agrees children need the right conditions to grow into healthy adults. Children thrive when they have the basics: nutritious food; a warm, safe home; medical attention if they are sick and a good education. Sadly, too many children in New Zealand don’t have the basics.

One in five New Zealand children currently lives in poverty, with life-long consequences for their health and wellbeing.

CPAG Convenor Mike O’Brien says, “It’s well within our power as a nation to ensure that every child has their basic needs met – as we do for the elderly. In a country like New Zealand, with ample resources, child poverty could be eliminated completely. It’s all about choice.”

This Children’s Day let’s make sure the decision-makers know we choose to look after all our children. Write a letter to your local newspaper, to your local MP or to John Key and remind them that the future of New Zealand depends on the well-being of every child.
