Asset Sales - You Mightn't Have Heard This One For A While
"As a Government we have decided to embark on a very ambitious step---a step that will give a large measure of moral force directly to the public by way of referenda."
That's Murray McCully back in 1992, when the then National Government was debating the Citizen's Initiated Referenda Bill. Here again, explaining the reasoning behind the bill:
"The Executive is too easily able to dominate Parliament and that parliament has become the puppet rather than the master of Cabinet."
So with opinion polls consistently recording between 60% and 70% of New Zealanders opposed to the partial privatisation of power companies, it's time time for John Key to stop the move to sell shares in Mighty River Power, and start listening to the people.
With Peter Love's blessing the public are invited to gather in front of Parliament at Waititi Landing Wednesday and Friday next week to demonstrate opposition to the sales and support for the Citizen's Initiated Referendum.
