TOAHNNEST specialist sexual violence intervention sector delighted with lead coordinating Minister
Te Ohaakii a Hine National Network Ending Sexual Violence Together (TOAHNNEST) is delighted that the Minister of Social Development accepted their request to be the government's lead Minister for the sexual violence intervention and prevention services following their meeting with the Minister 31 January 2013. TOAHNNEST has been seeking such leadership since it formed in 2005 and requested the Taskforce for Action on Sexual Violence.
TOAHNNEST believe that the Minister of Social Development is ideally placed to coordinate the broad range of responses required by various government agencies who have responsibilities to address sexual violence. This leadership provides the first opportunity for a whole of government response.
TOAHNNEST is a collaborative response across the specialist sexual violence and intervention sector that provide services to all people who are affected by sexual violence.
Dr Kim McGregor of TOAHNNEST says that "We need responses to be coordinated across government and as well as within our sector. A wide range of government ministries have responsibilities for sexual violence including: Social Development, ACC, Justice, Police, Corrections, Health, Education, and the monitoring agencies for Maori Affairs, Women's Affairs and, Pacific Island Affairs"
Mr Russell Smith of TOAHNNEST says "It is important that government fully support Kaupapa Maori responses to sexual violence in order to effect positive and lasting change within hapu and whanau".
