Christchurch shows anger at government education plans
Christchurch education communities have sent a strong message to the Minister of Education Hekia Parata at a rally in the city this afternoon.
Over 1500 school supporters left the rally and marched to the Education Ministry’s offices in Christchurch to deliver a motion of no confidence in the Minister’s record to date.
It follows the government’s announcement yesterday of its interim plan that includes the closure of seven schools and merger of another 12 by January next year.
NZEI Te Riu Roa National President Judith Nowotarski says it was a resounding turnout and sends a clear message to the government that it needs to listen to the people of Christchurch.
“We have serious concerns about the proposed changes and the pace at which the government plans to push them through.
“We will be supporting school communities through this process and we would hope that the government will now engage with them in a way that is fair, respectful and provides clear processes for engagement, review and appeal."
