Youth unemployment not Government's forte
Youth unemployment not Government's forte
Young Labour is shocked to hear of the latest household labour force survey which puts youth unemployment at 30.9%. The Young Labour representative for affiliated unions Lydia McKinnon says the figures are another example of a National Government which has failed to create jobs and failed to create a future for the young people of New Zealand.
"The unemployment rate for young people is up over 5% from last quarter, this is simply unacceptable from a government which promised job growth but has delivered nothing but harsh cuts which hurt the most vulnerable young New Zealanders," says Ms McKinnon.
"With these figures National has once again proven that it cannot be trusted to tackle youth unemployment," she adds.
"With people aged 15 to 24 now making up 44.8% of the jobless rate, there are few options left for young people in New Zealand. If John Key wants to stop young New Zealanders fleeing to Australia he needs to offer a meaningful plan for Kiwi jobs and stop paying lip service to a brighter future which certainly isn't on the horizon."
