Queer Avengers: McVicar’s comments “abhorrent, uninformed and hateful”
The Queer Avengers are concerned about the recent comments made by Garth McVicar, Sensible Sentencing Trust, as part of
his submission to the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill. “Crime will rise if gay couples are allowed to
marry,” says the head of the country's victim lobby group.
“As someone who lives with the aftermath of a homicide and having been a dyke of 35 years,” comments Ky Skellet, an
associate of the Queer Avengers, “I find McVicar's comments abhorrent, uninformed and hateful.” Skellet asks whether
McVicar has any evidence to support his claims.
Skellet has a message for McVicar: “Garth you need to remember that everything you do and say reflects on your lobby
group and to date many sensible people view SST as a conservative, racist and now homophobic organisation; I suggest
McVicar engages his brain before he opens his mouth and remember Garth, that gay people living in the shadow of a
homicide do not need to be further victimised by your homophobia.”
The Queer Avengers oppose any press platform for bigotry, including racism and homophobia.
Labour MP Louisa Wall's Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill is currently before a select committee, which
will report to Parliament on February 28. If passed, it could see gay marriage legal by May next year.
