NCWNZ welcomes funding boost for sexual abuse helpline
“NCWNZ is delighted that Auckland Sexual Abuse Helpline (ASAH) will be able to continue to provide its critical 24 hour
service to those who need it, when they need it most,” National Council of Women of New Zealand (NCWNZ) President
Barbara Arnold said today.
Barbara Arnold was commenting on the news that ASAH has secured interim funding and a commitment to a sustainable three
year contract, after a funding shortfall raised fears that service hours would be cut.
“The UN committee which monitors the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)
has expressed concern about the continued high and increasing levels of violence against women and the low rates of
reporting and conviction, particularly relating to sexual violence.
“Statistics show that one in five Auckland women are likely to experience sexual assault over their lifetime – so this
is a vital service,” explained Barbara Arnold.
“As well as 24 hour crisis counselling, ASAH provides a call-out service to support women through police interviews and
forensic medicals. It’s incredibly important that women can access the assistance they need, and it is clear that these
services are necessary 24 hours a day and not just during the standard working week.
“ We’re delighted that a funding solution has been found to ensure that these services continue,” Barbara Arnold
concluded.
