The People’s Choice seeks candidates for 2013
The largest grouping of local body politicians in Christchurch, The People’s Choice (formerly Christchurch 2021), is looking for candidates for next year’s local body election as they seek to make their vision of a grassroots, local democracy-driven rebuild a reality.
The grouping is modelling a new approach to local government, one that prioritises community boards and local expertise, and have begun a series of open policy forums. "We've got to walk the talk - we're serious about local democracy," says The People's Choice Chairperson Paul McMahon. "We want to see Christchurch rebuilt from the grassroots up, not the Beehive down."
McMahon says they would like to hear expressions of interest “of people who are committed to The People’s Choice’s values, who have character, competence and a good Cantabrian work ethic.
“There is a lot of work to do to rebuild not only our roads, buildings and community services, but also our local democracy. Our People’s Choice Councillors and Community Board Members have led the charge to defend grassroots democracy. In 2013, Christchurch has the chance to head in a fresh direction with new democratic leadership."
The People’s Choice would like to hear from anyone interested in running in Christchurch City under their banner for community board, Council, Mayor or the District Health Board.
Respondents can email the Chairperson, Paul McMahon at paul.mcmahon@thepeopleschoice.org.nz
