Living Standards and Equity: Understanding the Issues and Debunking the Myths
Speaker: Gabriel Makhlouf Chief Executive and Secretary, The Treasury
As Secretary to The Treasury, Gabriel (Gabs) Makhlouf is Chief Executive of one of the three Central Agencies of the New Zealand Government, and is its chief economic and financial adviser. His career has previously been in the UK civil service, where he held positions at HM Revenue & Customs, the Inland Revenue and HM Treasury. He chaired the world’s main tax-ruling body at the OECD and was Principal Private Secretary to the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown. He has a BA degree in Economics and an MSc in Industrial Relations, and is fluent in French and Greek. Gabs enjoys watching sport (he has a particular interest in the history of the FIFA World Cup), reading, the cinema, and travelling with his wife Sandy. He has an adult son who lives in London.
