Te Rarawa calls Iwi Summit Hui following signing of Deed of Settlement
Te Rarawa recently signed their Deed of Settlement with the Crown for the historical Treaty claims. It is now time to
work with the wider iwi through a Summit Hui which is to be held in Kaitaia on Thursday 22nd November to Saturday 24th
November in order to prepare a vision and plan for the future.
As part of the long term planning process for the iwi, 'He Anga Whakamua', Te Rarawa has called the Summit to provide an
opportunity for Te Rarawa, whanau, hapu and marae to have input into the future direction of their Iwi. The summit will
focus on a wide scope of opportunities for Te Rarawa involving education, the environment, as well as social, cultural
and economic development.
Te Runanga o Te Rarawa Chairman Haami Piripi says, "We are looking forward to the opportunity to bring home people with
skills, talents and knowledge, and to be able to combine these with the people at home who have their own talents,
culture and knowledge. This combination will give us a sound platform and should provide some good go forward capacity
for our iwi, as we lay down a vision and direction for our collective future."
The opening ceremony will begin at 11am on the 22nd November at the Te Ahu centre on Matthews Ave in Kaitaia. A range of
keynote speakers, interactive workshops and presentations are planned which are all designed to provide an opportunity
for Te Rarawa members to feed into the direction for the iwi as a whole. The Summit will also host a special celebration
dinner acknowledging the deeds of Te Rarawa leaders who have made significant contributions at a local and national
level.
