‘No to Violence’ Unites Australasian Indigenous Networks

Te Kupenga – the National Network of Stopping Violence – is an official supporter of an Australasian conference promoting indigenous dialogue and collaboration.

Maori domestic and family violence experts will be a part of the New Zealand delegation attending the No To Violence 2012 Australasian Conference on Responses to Men’s Domestic and Family Violence in Melbourne next month (Wednesday-Friday, November 14-16 2012).

The three-day symposium includes an ‘Indigenous Platform’ for Maori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander practitioners to share experiences, opportunities and practice innovations.

As well as indigenous family violence presenters from five Australian states and territories, Parekotuku Moore – Kaihautū: National Manager Kaupapa Māori/Practice at Te Kupenga – will deliver a workshop showcasing the Network’s Maori best practice framework for Maori men’s stopping violence programmes, Kia Rangatira Te Mahi.

She will also join with Brian Gardner – National Manager of Strategic Relationships and Advocacy at Te Kupenga – to co-present a second workshop examining the political, social and community contexts that have influenced change in the national Network over the past two decades.

No To Violence acknowledges the Yalukit Willam of Bunurong territory within the Kulin Nation as the traditional owners of the land in which the conference is to be held. It is also acknowledged that in the absence of treaties and other processes that recognise indigenous sovereignty, the Kulin and other indigenous nations remain unjustly occupied.

Te Kupenga is a network of 42 independent community-based groups – from Whangarei to Invercargill – working to end violence and abuse in families.
