Kate Sheppard Memorial Trust Announces Successful Applicant on Women’s Suffrage Day

“Women’s Suffrage Day is an important day to remember in New Zealand’s history. We have the unique privilege of being the first country that gave women the vote, thanks to Kate Sheppard and her friends who fought so hard for the right of New Zealand women to vote” said Karena Brown, Chairperson of the Kate Sheppard Memorial Trust.

“That is why the Trust chose today to announce the successful recipient of the 2012 Kate Sheppard Memorial Trust Award. It was our pleasure to make the announcement at the Suffrage Night Celebrations at Middleton Grange in Christchurch, the home city of Kate Sheppard. This year’s recipient is Helen Tsui, is a 26 year old PhD and Clinical Psychology student at the University of Otago”

“Helen, as well as training to be a clinical psychologist, is undertaking research to find a diagnostic blood test for Alzheimer’s disease that can detect this disease at its early stages. This will help identify individuals with the disease and allow medical intervention to take place before the disease has progressed to a severe stage”

“The Trust is very pleased to be able to continue to assist talented women achieve their dreams. Given New Zealand’s aging population, and the increasing number of people with dementia, the research being undertaken by this year’s recipient will be very important to New Zealand as well as overseas. We are sure that Kate Sheppard would be proud to lend her name to such a worthwhile area of study.”
