Māori students demand - Key get your dirty hands off our water!
Students from Victoria University will today be hitting the streets of Wellington in an action intended to highlight
Maori ownership of Aotearoa New Zealand's fresh water resources. Flyers stating the position will be handed out, and the
public are encouraged to join the group and others at the Amora Hotel, Wakefield Street, 5pm this Wednesday (19
September) to protest destruction of water resources by fracking and oil drilling.
Group spokesperson Karen Scoon said:
"Māori are forced to claim ownership of something that has always been ours. The Government claims no one "owns water",
but it has assumed the rights and taken the privileges of the property holder.They want to give away control of it and
us through international treaties like the Trans Pacific Partnership, or polluting and destroying it through fracking
and oil drilling.
"We say enough. Water is a taonga, we will never agree to the sale and destruction of it. I am Māori, I am water, the
water is me."
