New Zealand has significant levels of child poverty which are having negative impacts on many children. Poverty also
inposes substantial costs on the wider society, including considerable fiscal costs. In March 2012, the Children’s
Commissioner, Dr Russell Wills, established an Expert Advisory Group (EAG) on Solutions to Child Poverty. The EAG will
publish its first report, an Issues and Options Paper, on 28 August, together with about 20 background papers on a raft
of issues relating to child poverty. A final report will be completed by mid-December 2012.
The Institute for Governance and Policy Studies in the School of Government at Victoria University of Wellington is
hosting a one-day workshop to explore the policy options for reducing child poverty and mitigating its effects.
Attendance is free.
The Workshop will include formal presentations and moderated discussions.
