Inheritors of 1776
Of all the events of 1776, even including the American Declaration of Independence, that which most conditions our daily
lives was the publication by Adam Smith of his seminal book The Wealth of Nations. It declared that enlightened self-interest was the most significant driver of the wealth of a country. It is the unique
combination of the acceptance of his prescription and, like Marx, the rejection of it, that we now have the economic
pickle that we find ourselves in today.
