FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Socialist candidate for United States president to visit New Zealand
Socialist candidate for president of the United States in the November 6 election, James Harris, will visit New Zealand September 11-14.
Harris, 64, is a veteran trade unionist and longstanding leader of the Socialist Workers Party. He has been active for more than four decades in the struggle for Black rights, in mobilisations against imperialist wars from Vietnam to Afghanistan, and in working class politics.
The Socialist Workers Party campaign champions resistance by working people in face of the far-reaching world capitalist economic crisis that is getting underway. It calls for solidarity with unions fighting employer assaults, and it fights for the labour movement to support the struggles of all the oppressed and exploited. The campaign urges working people to oppose the wars and military assaults abroad by the U.S. government.
Harris's running mate for vice-president is Maura DeLuca, 33, a factory worker active in struggles for the rights of immigrants and for women's right to abortion, an issue that has become a major topic in the campaign debates
The socialist campaign is getting a hearing among working people in the U.S. today as they confront joblessness, housing evictions, and employer take-back demands. Harris is visiting New Zealand to discuss these same questions with working people here.
The Socialist Workers Party candidates campaign against both the Democratic Party ticket of Barack Obama and the Republican Party ticket of Mitt Romney. They explain that the Democratic and Republican parties are the parties of the ruling rich. They call for working people to mobilise their own strength and organise politically, independent of the ruling parties.
The four-day visit by James Harris is hosted by the Communist League.
