Business & Professional Women Support Making Alcohol Age 20

Business and Professional Women Support Increasing Alcohol Purchasing Age to 20

The New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW NZ) is urging all members of Parliament to support an amendment to raise the age at which alcohol can be purchased from licensed premises to 20 when they vote on the Alcohol Reform Bill this week.

National MP Tim Macindoe has tabled an amendment to the Alcohol Law Reform bill which increases the purchasing age of alcohol to 20.

“We urge all members of parliament to vote in favour of raising the age for purchasing alcohol from any licensed premises to 20 years of age,” says Carolyn Savage, President BPW NZ.

“Research shows a clear relationship between lowering the age at which alcohol can be purchased and an increase in alcohol related problems.

“Young women and men suffer needlessly from violence and illnesses as a result of increased access to liquor at a younger age.

“Raising the purchasing age to 20 is only one of the many ways we can curb the abuse of alcohol in New Zealand.

“The first chance our MPs have to start making our communities safe is to vote to raise the purchase age,” says Mrs. Savage.

“We urge all MPs to vote in favour of Tim Macindoe’s Supplementary Order Paper.”
