Burger King trying to hide from criticism
Unite union will be bringing all the facts to support its claims of exploitation to a teach-in planned for 12 noon today
at a Burger King near in Aotea Square in Auckland.
The company has claimed that we haven't included some of issues around exploiting young, vulnerable and migrant workers
in our legal case against the company.
What we are saying is that the company has conducted a sustained, illegal anti-union campaign that has bullied hundreds
of our members into leaving the union.
What we have explained is that they are doing this to prevent the abuse and exploitation of these vulnerable young and
migrant workers. They want to stop us exposing their abuses.
Our legal case will be exposing their illegal anti-union campaign. But at the same time we will be publicly naming and
shaming this company as a corporate thus.
Today we will be bringing copies of all our evidence to the teach-in for the media to see if they have any doubts about
our claims.
This will include emails from area managers to store managers demanding they do more to get staff out of the union. It
will include lying claim from the company that they weren't conducting any campaign to force resignations. It will
include statements from individual workers on how they have been abused and exploited. And it will include data on how
BK has kept 75% of its staff on the minimum wage regardless of how long they have worked for the company.
