Tobacco: Plain packaging – plain sailing

Plain packaging – plain sailing
It is a great day when you see the tobacco industry humiliated with the Australian courts supporting plain packaging of tobacco products.
“I am looking forward to the New Zealand Government also taking on plain packaging in this country within a year. Another key marketing avenue has been nailed shut.” said public health advocate Shane Bradbrook – Director of Te Ao Hurihuri. “This ruling clears the way for the New Zealand Government to follow suit.”
The tobacco companies have effectively lost their remaining marketing tool. Plain packaging will reduce the attractiveness of the product and nullify any ability to promote tobacco as being glamorous.
“The tobacco companies will now be worried because these sorts of watershed results will quickly spread from Australia to other nations. Displays are now hidden and now the last marketing platform is gone in Australia. Soon it will happen in New Zealand and then beyond. This is a great day for public health.” says Mr Bradbrook.
