Share a story for Gamblefree Day
Story telling is the theme for a Gamblefree Day competition this year hosted by Asian Family Services at the Problem
Gambling Foundation in conjunction with Choice Not Chance.
The competition, available in six languages, challenges people to get creative and write a short story about gambling
harm to be in to win one of three exciting prizes in each language division.
John Wong, Asian Family Services Director, says story telling is a powerful way for people to express their feelings
about gambling harm and helps to reduce the stigma associated with problem gambling.
“People can write about their own personal experiences with gambling or just express their thoughts on gambling,” he
says.
Asian Family Services has introduced a story competition for the first time this year following the success of the
slogan competition held for Gamblefree Day last year.
John Wong says last year they received over 900 entries for the slogan competition.
“We were delighted with the success of last year’s competition. The community really got behind the event and supported
it and we hope to draw on that success for the story competition this year,” he says.

A special prize giving event will be held on Saturday 15 September at Chinatown, 262 Ti Rakau Drive, East Tamaki
starting at 2pm.
The event will feature entertainment and prize giving acknowledging the winners of the story competition, volunteers and
local businesses.
Gamblefree Day is held every year on the 1st September to raise awareness about problem gambling in New Zealand.
