Prime Minister John Key today hosted the 2012 edition of The Prime Minister’s Hour, an annual event on RadioLIVE.
Audio of the full show, which was broadcast nationwide between 2-3pm, is available here, along with individual audio clips of the Prime Minister’s interviews with Al Brown, Sir David Frost, John Howard, Sarah Ulmer and Al Brown.
Speaking to John Key from a cruise ship off the coast of Canada, legendary journalist Sir David Frost discussed the people he has interviewed in his remarkable career, giving listeners a unique insight into his most famous interview - with Richard Nixon.
Frost recalled watching Nixon’s televised farewell speech, and thinking: “this is the most fascinating, challenging, and difficult, probably, man to interview in the world, but one must have a go.”
It took over a year for Nixon agreed to the interview, which played to an audience of 45 million viewers, and remains the longest in Frost’s career.
“There was so much about his life that was unique and I was determined to try if one could get a ‘yes’ from him, to try to get that sort of admission, that confession, as people would put it and predicted you never would with Nixon,” he told Key.
“And of course when it happened, after hours and hours of almost ‘attritional’ interviewing it was an absolutely exultant moment But along the way there, it was 12 days [and] 28 and three quarter hours. I don’t think anyone’s ever been interviewed for 28 and three quarter hours.”
Today’s show also featured former Australian Prime Minister, Hon John Howard speaking candidly about committing Australian forces to Iraq, his perceptions of George Bush, and the importance of the relationship between Australia and New Zealand; restaurateur Al Brown discussing the New Zealand food industry; and Sarah Ulmer sharing her experience of winning Olympic gold.
