Pay Equity Coalition wants action on UN Recommendations

Pay Equity Coalition wants action on UN Recommendations

The Pay Equity Challenge Coalition is calling on the Government to take action following recommendations to the New Zealand Government from the United Nations’ Committee on the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) particularly with respect to pay inequality and pay equity.

“We welcome the recommendations of the CEDAW committee and look forward to the Government taking action,” says spokesperson Angela McLeod.

“The committee mirrors our concern at the closure of the Pay and Employment Equity Unit of the Department of Labour and are recommending that the government ensures there is a monitoring institution.”

“The CEDAW committee also recommends that there be effective pay equity legislation.

"So do we and with two bills already drafted, the hard graft is done.

“The Government needs to support them through Parliament.”

“Surely the CEDAW committee's concern that the 'Ministry of Women’s Affairs lacks a consistent policy for bridging the persistent wage gaps between women and men' is a wakeup call to the Government.

"We need better resourcing for the Ministry of Women's Affairs and an action plan.

"We look forward to seeing both.”
