Jigsaw Tells Parliament That Maori Solutions Are Needed To Improve Outcomes for Maori Children
Child abuse prevention network, Jigsaw says that the Maori Affairs Select Committee has an opportunity to come up with Maori solutions to improve outcomes for tamariki.
Jigsaw’s Chief Executive (Strategic Relationships) Tau Huirama today addressed the Maori Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the Social Determinants for Wellbeing of Maori Children.
Tau Huirama says the Committee has the chance now to come up with something fresh that addresses the needs of Maori.
“Current research into families is done from a middle class/generic perspective,” Tau says. “It’s important that Maori processes are also researched so that we learn what works and what doesn’t.”
Tau Huirama also says that reconnecting rangatahi with their whakapapa and language will help improve outcomes for Maori children.
“Teaching young people about their ancestry and language helps to boost their self esteem and sense of self worth,” Tau says. “It helps spark their dreams for the future and for the wellbeing of their children.”
He says strong, supportive whanau connections empower families and help tamariki reach their full potential.
