Labour MP Phil Twyford accepted the near 10,000 strong Avaaz petition to Save Denniston Plateau outside the National Party Conference on Saturday. The Prime Minister refused an invitation to meet with the petitioners.
The petitioners ran a faux Olympic relay around the SkyCity Conference Centre as delegates arrived for the conference, with a torch containing the petition and supported by ‘teams’ representing ‘clean air and water’, ‘climate’, ‘kiwi’, ‘biodiversity’ and ‘our children’s children’.
MP Twyford was greeted by placards reading “WANTED: One Courageous Politician” and “COAL KILLS KIWIS: Save Denniston Plateau” and acknowledged the importance of Denniston Plateau as he accepted the torch.
The Green Party officially supports protection of the Plateau while Labour has not yet announced an official position.
