Abel Tasman 370 years

Three hundred and seventy years ago the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman arrived in New Zealand. He named the country after one of Netherland’s provinces. Friday the 15th of June, Ambassador Arie van der Wiel opened a Seminar on Abel Tasman in Nelson, instigated by him in 2011: “What really happened at Golden Bay in 1642”.
People gathered to listen to 8 New Zealand and 2 Dutch scholars, discussing their specialized theses on a variety of subject related to the Dutch explorer’s meeting with local Maori in what is now called Golden Bay.
The seminar proved to be a good platform for some very interesting discussions ranging from ‘Did Tasman actually set foot on New Zealand soil’ to ‘What caused the violent encounter between the Maori and the explorer’s team?’. One of the main conclusions was that more comparative research is needed to find out the facts of Tasman’s expedition.

Te Hono ki Aotearoa – A Maori Waka in the Netherlands

In 2010 a Maori Waka, a ceremonial boat, was made in New Zealand for the city of Leiden in the Netherlands. The whole process from the making to the initiation of the boat is shown in a documentary released in 2012, following the journey of the waka as it becomes the ceremonial waka for the Netherlands and for Europe. The waka was commissioned for the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden by Toi Maori Aotearoa. http://waka.volkenkunde.nl/dewaka/
Te Hono ki Aotearoa shows the dedication of all involved, from the earliest negotiations through to the handing over in Leiden.

Dutch Films New Zealand 2012 International Film Festival

Two films made by Dutch filmmakers are shown in the International Film Festival this year:

Shock Head Soul 2011 - Simon Pummell - Documentary
This documentary portrays the most celebrated autobiography of madness 'from the inside' written by Daniel Paul Schreber in 1903. It shows this successful lawyer receiving messages from God via a Writing Down Machine and his submission to God's plan to change him into a woman, which would save the world.

Our Newspaper 2010 – Eline Flipsen - Documentary
In a remote Russian countryside village, after quitting his job at the Moscow national paper, journalist Andrej Shkolni starts a meaningful independent local newspaper. Shkolni’s tenacity and dedication to journalistic integrity are admirable and identifiable in this snapshot of contemporary Russia.

Further Dutch co-productions:
¡Vivan las Antipodas! – Argentina/Chile/Germany/The Netherlands 2011
In my Mother’s Arms – Iraq/the Netherlands/UK/UAE 2011 Atia and Mohmed Jabarah Al-Daradji
