UN Youth gives kiwis a taste of international aspirations
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
UN Youth gives young
kiwis a taste of the nation’s international
aspirations.
Auckland, New Zealand, 10 July 2012 – New Zealand’s possible candidacy for the United Nations Security Council might be three years away but a group of 80 university students are getting a sneak peek this August.
UN Youth New Zealand (UN Youth) is giving students from around the country the opportunity to live the life of a Security Council delegate for four days. The New Zealand Model Security Council 2012 (NZ Model SC) is UN Youth’s premier event for University students. It will be held at the University of Auckland from the 29thst of August to the 1st of September.
During the conference delegates represent their country individually on five Security Council committees. This year’s theme ‘Domains of Warfare’, deals with the wide range of technologies used in conflict in the present day. Each committee will write a resolution addressing their given situation and detailing their proposed actions. This process aims make delegates consider some of the hard issues facing our world today as well as firing up their imagination, emotions and inspiration!
UN Youth is an organisation run by young people for young people. UN Youth is affiliated to the United Nations Association of New Zealand, a member of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). These larger organisations, like UN Youth, are guided by their vision that the United Nations is a powerful force in meeting common global challenges and opportunities.
Whether New Zealand succeeds in its bid to be a part of the UN Security Council or not, continued support for our nation’s representation in the global arena is paramount. Giving youth a first-hand experience of international politics at the NZ Model Security Council 2012 will encourage an appreciation of New Zealand’s international aspirations as well as raising awareness about the issues we face as a global community.
