People Against Asset Sales to take to the Streets
People Against Asset Sales to take to the Streets
A symbolic action to represent the more than 5000 Nelson
locals who
have signed a petition for a Citizens
Initiated Referendum on Asset
Sales is being organised
for 11am at the Trafalgar St entrance to the
Nelson
Markets. The action is being is being planned by the
collective
who organised the 28 April event when over 500
people marched up
Nelson’s Trafalgar St to protest the
National Government’s refusal to
listen to the people
on the issue of asset sales. The collective of
organisers
represents local activists from the Labour Party,
Green
Party, unions and concerned individuals.
Aotearoa is Not For Sale Nelson spokesperson Rachel
Boyack said the
Saturday 14 July event was timed to
coincide with actions throughout
New Zealand as part of
the nationwide Day of Action against Asset
Sales.
Thousands of people are expected to turn out across the
nation
to protest against the partial sale of our power
companies.
Rachel Boyack says that since the April
march, many people living in
Nelson have expressed their
frustration at the Government's failure to
listen to the
people about their feelings on asset sales.
"The
Government has rushed through Asset Sales legislation,
which
shows they are running scared, and trying to
silence the voices of the
people", Rachel Boyack said.
"Well, we won't be silenced, and we
won't be going
away."
The demonstration will begin at 11am sharp,
at the Trafalgar St
entrance to the Nelson Markets.
Members of the public who wish to
join the demonstration
are warmly invited to do so, and asked to
please arrive
at Trafalgar St by 10.45am.
The demonstration will
involve skits and a symbolic action to
represent the
thousands of local people who have shown their
opposition
to Asset Sales already by signing the petition for
a
referendum.
The campaign has been endorsed by a
number of New Zealand Political
Parties and
Organisations, including the Labour Party, Green
Party,
New Zealand First, Mana Party, Greenpeace, New
Zealand Nurses
Organisation, Service and Food Workers
Union, Maritime Union and
Actors' Equity.
