National Strengthens Lead, Labour Highest Since 2011

National (47.5%, up 1.5%) Strengthens Lead,
But Labour (32%, up 1%) at Highest Since 2011 Election

Finding No. 4798 - This latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll on voting intention was conducted by telephone with a NZ wide cross-section of 1,057 electors from June 8-24, 2012. Of all electors surveyed 3.5% (down 0.5%) didn’t name a party.: June 27, 2012

Today’s New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows a rise in support for Prime Minister John Key’s National Party 47.5% (up 1.5% since May 28 — June 7, 2012). Support for Key’s Coalition partners has barely changed with the Maori Party 1.5% (unchanged), United Future 0.5% (unchanged) and ACT NZ 0.5% (up 0.5%).

Support for Labour has risen 1% to 32% (the highest Labour has been since July 2011), Greens are 12% (down 0.5%), New Zealand First 4% (down 1.5%), Mana Party 0.5% (down 0.5%) and Others 1.5% (down 0.5%).

If a National Election were held today today’s New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll suggests National would be likely to retain Government by a slim margin — today’s poll is very similar to the 2011 Election result.
The latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating is up 7 points to 117.5, with 52% (up 4%) of New Zealanders saying New Zealand is ‘heading in the right direction’ compared to 34.5% (down 3%) that say New Zealand is ‘heading in the wrong direction’.

“Today’s New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows National (47.5%, up 1.5%) increasing their lead over the main Opposition Labour Party (32%, up 1%) — however Labour has also improved its standing to record its highest support since the 2011 New Zealand Election.

“The increase in support for Labour appears to come from fellow Opposition Party New Zealand First (4%, down 1.5%), which has now recorded its lowest support since last year’s New Zealand Election. This is similar to the level of support NZ First attracted at the 2008 New Zealand Election at which the party failed to win any seats in the Parliament.”

Electors were asked: “If a New Zealand Election were held today which party would receive your party vote?”
