CCS Pleased with the Decision to Pay Family Carers

13 June 2012

CCS DISABILITY Action is Pleased with the Decision to Pay Family Carers

CCS Disability Action, a leading disability organisation, is pleased the Government has decided not to appeal the court decision on paid family carers. Minister of Health, Tony Ryall announced today that a new policy will be developed over the next year that will allow the payment of family carers.

Kate Cosgriff, acting chief executive of CCS Disability Action, said she was happy with the decision, but will be following the development of the new policy closely.

“This is a well deserved victory for disabled people and their families. It is a complicated issue, but I am pleased the Government has finally recognised the decisions of two Courts and the Human Rights Tribunal. We will reserve full judgement until all details of the new policy are announced.”

“Government funded agencies spend large amounts of time organising complicated and expensive support packages, which do not always work for disabled people and their families and whanau. In some cases, paying a family member to provide care is the best option”, says Ms Cosgriff.
