Caring Counts Report Welcomed

Grey Power wishes to congratulate the Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner, Dr Judy McGregor on her comprehensive and well researched report on carers for the aged. Her work in aged care facilities shows her dedication to ensuring the report was as a result of first hand experiences.

Her first recommendation that the minister for older people has a top ten Cabinet ranking is one that Grey Power has advocated for a long time.

Recognition of the importance of the position of carers is well overdue and it is important that they are given the opportunity to obtain Level 2 qualifications and higher. Society must acknowledge that the career of a carer in the aged sector is highly valued and they are an integral part of obtaining a quality of life as we age. The remuneration they receive must reflect this.

We fully support all 12 recommendations Dr McGregor has made in her report. The onus is now on all groups including ours to ensure that these recommendations are implemented within the time frame she has set out.
