Time Running Out to Take Part in Electoral Commission’s MMP Review
Time is running out to have your say on improvements you’d like to see made to our MMP voting system.
With only two weeks to go until the first consultation period of the MMP Review closes, the Electoral Commission has received more than 3700 submissions and heard from around 150 people at public hearings around the country.
Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden is thrilled by the results so far. “We’ve been extremely pleased with the number and quality of submissions we have received, and want to thank those who have put so much effort into their contributions. For those who are still thinking about taking part, you only have until 31 May to get your submission in to the Electoral Commission.”
Information on the MMP Review is available in English, Maori, New Zealand Sign Language, Tongan, Samoan, Chinese and Korean, and submissions can be made online, by email, or by post. Any member of the public can make a submission, as an individual or representing a group or organisation.
Once all submissions are received, the Commission will develop a set of proposals, based on the information and views presented in submissions and from the public hearings. These will be released as a proposal paper in August, and the public will again be invited to comment. A final recommendation paper will be presented to the Minister of Justice by 31 October.
“It’s easy to make a submission, and there is still time,” says Mr Peden. “You can make your submission any way you want – online, via email or letter, or using our easy submission guide. Check our website www.mmpreview.org.nz or call our freephone 0800 36 76 56 to get all the information you’ll need.”
Submissions close 31 May.
