Concerns raised about Chinese Intellectual Property Rights
Questions have been raised by Councillor Dick Quax about the by Mayor Len Brown’s statement that: “we’re finding there
is an interest from China in New Zealand intellectual property and capability and partnering with New Zealand”.
“Councillors don’t know anything about a “statement of co operation signed in Beijing”.
“I would be concerned if this meant easier access for China to New Zealand’s ideas and innovation. We are a country of
entrepreneurs and innovators and we need to guard our intellectual property like gold”.
“This statement of co operation has not been sanctioned by the Auckland Council and sounds like a gain for Beijing at
the expense of Auckland business”.
I’m all for doing business with China but we always need to be mindful of their track record when it comes to its
disregard for intellectual property rights of others.”
