Aotearoa is Not for Sale - Hikoi support walk
Aotearoa is Not for Sale ! Hikoi support walk :
Otautahi/Christchurch : Saturday 28th April.
This local Hikoi support walk is inspired by the national Aotearoa is not for sale Hikoi that is currently making its way down to Wellington from the top of the north island and is expected to grow in numbers in Auckland on Saturday when Otautahi/Christchurch also walks in solidarity.
Participants will be meeting at 4:30 up the road from the Riccarton racecourse Steadman road entrance.
The press release on the national Hikoi begins :
'You are invited to participate in a National Hikoi for all concerned people against privatisation, asset sales, welfare reforms, deep water oil drilling, coal mining, fracking and the TPPA. Aotearoa is not for sale ... Hikoi 2012'
It later describes the alternative as... 'to establish controls on the power of government that limit their ability to make up the rules or policies as they go along. To establish a vision for our society that is determined by the citizens and not the politicians and then have this vision imbedded constitutionally as the highest form of law and therefore ensure that these rights, freedoms and responsibilities cannot be tinkered with at the whim of politicians, political parties or their agents. There will be a constitutional transformation wananga in Wellington as part of the event.'
It is officially endorsed by The Labour Party, The Green Party, The Mana Party, New Zealand first, Unions Auckland, the CTU Runanga Kaimahi Maori, Greenpeace, the Unite Union, the EPMU, MUNZ, Actors Equity, New Zealand Nurses Organisation , the Service and Food Workers Union, NZEI Auckland, the Manufacturing and Construction Workers Union, the Working Women's Resource Centre, Occupy Aotearoa, the Hikoi to stop Asset Sales, Socialist Aotearoa, the Post Primary Teachers' Association many other organisations
The location for the start of the Otautahi/Christchurch Hikoi support walk was chosen due to its potential for maximising support for it.
Earlier in the day the likes of Jason Kerrison, Rob Grover Trio, Hera & House of Mountain, Solomon Muir, TAOS, Tiki Taane and Minuit will be performing at the Bring Change - Frack No Deep Sea Drilling Peaceful Revolution concert at Riccarton racecource. The Bring Change concert organisers have made it clear that they do not want to be seen as the organisers of the Hikoi support walk. However they are keen for the event, along with many other campaigns, to be promoted at the venue on the day. The focus for them is strictly Fracking and Deep sea drilling.
So we here in Otautahi/Christchurch extend a warm welcome to one and all concerned, who may want to support these causes on the day in this chosen way.
" John Key, you've got mail...Aotearoa is not for sale. " National Hikoi participants.
'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens, can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has'. Margeret Mead (American cultural anthropologist 1901-1978)
