Wellington Students Kick Off Global Jerusalem Commemoration
Students for Justice in Palestine, together with a wide range of organisations globally, will be holding a solidarity
picket for the Global March to Jerusalem this Friday. The picket will be held outside the Israeli Embassy, 39 The
Terrace, at 1pm on the 30th of March.
Marches will take place in the Middle East and worldwide on 30 March 2012. The date marks the 1976 anniversary of Land
Day, when six Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed by Israeli forces as they protested against the proposed
confiscation of their land by the Israeli state. Palestinians and global activists have been commemorating Land Day ever
since.
This year Land Day is being commemorated with the Global March to focus international attention on the ongoing
destruction of Jerusalem, a city which is so politically, culturally and religiously important to the whole of humanity.
The Global March is a peaceful, non-violent response to the systemic discrimination of Palestinians in Jerusalem. Since
1967, Israel has revoked the residency rights of almost 15,000 Palestinians and Palestinian Muslims and Christians from
the West Bank and Gaza are frequently denied the right to practice their faith in the Holy City. In addition, human
rights groups have calculated that Israel has demolished more than 24,000 Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem, the West
Bank and Gaza since the occupation began.
A photo will be taken in Wellington at dawn on Friday which the principal coordinators of the Global March in the United
Kingdom will be releasing to signal the beginning of this worldwide commemoration event.
Students for Justice in Palestine will stand with people of conscience worldwide who oppose Israel’s ethnic cleansing,
racism and apartheid against Palestinians in Jerusalem.
