EDS expresses regret at loss of a
very capable Environment Minister
The Chairman of the
Environmental Defence Society, Gary Taylor, has expressed
regret at the resignation of Hon Dr Nick Smith as Minister
for the Environment.
"In our experience Dr Smith was a
very capable, dedicated and courageous Minister and helped
bring environmental matters into the upper echelons of
National-led governments," said Mr Taylor.
"In particular,
he was bold in supporting the Land and Water Forum which is
looking at fundamental reform of the way we manage
freshwater in this country.
"Endorsing a new
collaborative way of making environmental policy will be one
of his enduring legacies.
"Dr Smith was very engaged with the environment portfolio and understood the complexities of it very well. Emerging policy in freshwater, oceans, and Resource Management Act reforms is no easy beat for a Minister.
"We say direct to him: we are sorry to see that you have to resign and we have enjoyed our open and intelligent professional relationship.
"EDS looks forward to working with his successor," Mr Taylor concluded.
