Elderly well-cared for during strike action
Oceania Group says elderly residents in the company’s senior living and care facilities throughout the country are being
well-cared for during the industrial action taken by union members today.
Chief Executive Guy Eady said he was concerned that the union is escalating the dispute by calling into question the
quality of care provided to residents during last Thursday’s strike.
“Oceania Living expects its facilities to provide a high standard of care at all times. We do not allow untrained people
to be responsible for our elderly residents during this industrial action, as the union is claiming, or at any other
time. The people looking after our residents during the strike action are there to ensure the residents are cared for
safely,” Mr Eady said.
The company is confident there will be no further disruption to residents when the second strike occurs this afternoon.
“We’re disappointed that the unions have continued with strike action today when we had already offered and arranged to
continue our negotiations tomorrow. We hoped the unions would have called off today’s strike as a gesture of good faith
and to show a genuine intent to settle the matter,” he said.
Oceania Group has offered workers a 3 percent increase in their hourly rate over 15 months.
